This simple vinyl bracelet, trademarked "refs choice", is designed to assist high school wrestling referees in dual meets. One duty of the referee is assure the proper choice is given to the correct wrestler in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Throughout a dual meet with all the action as well as potential forfeits, the ref may lose track of who has choice resulting in a conversation with the scoring table, delays in the match and on occasion, not giving correct choice.
This simple device has alternating weight classes printed on each side in bold white letters. Here's how it works...
1. At the initial disk flip determine the following:
A. Which team will be green (you will where this on your right wrist with green armband)
B. What is the starting weight class
C. What choice, odd or even, the winner of the toss makes
2. If the first match of the dual, the odd match, is say 145lbs and the team assigned green has choice in odd matches then rotate the band so the side has 145 visible on it. If green has choice in the even matches then flip it to the side that has 152 (the first even match) visible.
3. Once the band is oriented correctly you simply need to know the weight class that is on the mat, glance at bracelet, if the weighclass is one that is visible then green has choice, if not then red has choice.
This device has been tested in my association an the officials stand by it. The key element is that it takes the scoring table out of it and keeps the flow of matches moving without interruptions and reduces errors.
We have enough to be concerned about on the mat and this eliminates one of those concerns. The idea came to me following a dual meet where I had to get choice from the table after a 0-0 1st period. The incorrect wrestler was
given choice in period 2 and scored the 1st points in the match which impacted the outcome in the ultimate tie breaker.
